    PLAYHOUSE CREATURES

    by April De Angelis

Regional Premiere

Our inaugural stage production is the regional premiere of the astounding comedy, PLAYHOUSE CREATURES, about five real-world actresses who worked in London during the Restoration when women were first "allowed" to appear on stage.  This brilliant play, written by April De Angelis (an English playwright, based in the U.K.), is routinely performed across the pond (including a recent production at the New Vic Theatre in the U.K.), but has NEVER been presented professionally here in Texas, until now.  A laser-focused look at the opportunities and dead ends women faced back then, with parallels and resonance for us today (Me Too and Black Lives Matter) - these characters present a glittering and sometimes gut-wrenching glimpse into the lives of ambitious, passionate, striving women, navigating the highs and lows of the society into which they’ve been “plopped.” A work of raucous humor and unapologetic emotion, that presumes no one is a villain, PLAYHOUSE CREATURES seeks to widen our lens on how we view women.

The Garden Club

by Nancy Mercado

New Play Reading

Set in California in the 1970's, THE GARDEN CLUB is written by Houston-based playwright Nancy Mercado.  This comedy-drama centers on six women friends - their lives, careers, familes and friendship as they come together for conversation and to create floral arrangements for their Garden Club.  Amidst the dramatic social and political changes of the times, these fascinating and flawed women get to grow, change, and discover more about themselves, each other and what they really want in life.

               LIONWOMAN  COMMUNITY  OUTREACH

We seek to join forces with like-minded artists, individuals and organizations to serve our communities and steer us towards our best selves.  With this momentum, we can make positive changes in policy and action toward equal access and opportunity that lifts all boats, especially underserved populations.

With a strong background in education, coaching, and curriculum design, Lionwoman Productions envisions “Dragonslayer” workshops, exploring interdisciplinary arts (visual arts, dance, music, theater, writing, storytelling) to represent lived experience and events that focus on social consciousness and celebrate our humanity.  Potential outreach venues include churches, community centers and schools.

PAST  LIONWOMAN  PROJECTS

Stories from the Space Between Us

(November, 2020):  STORIES FROM THE SPACE BETWEEN US was created and directed by Michelle Britton.  This original concept showcase was presented via two nights by Zoom for audiences.  With a focus on relationship-building, a diverse ensemble of actors  from Houston, New York, Los Angeles and the mid-West selected and performed short pieces and also shared with the audiences the relevance of their pieces to current social issues.

Sycorax

by Susan Gayle Todd

(June, 2020): SYCORAX is by playwright, scholar and former Artistic Director of Austin Scottish Rite Theatre, Susan Gayle Todd.  This original play is an imagined retelling of the myth of Caliban's mother from Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST.  Ms. Todd applied a feminist perspective to the character of Sycorax, who is traditionally characterized as an "evil witch." In collaboration with the Austin Scottish Rite Theatre, Lionwoman provided direction and co-produced a virtual reading of the play, which recieved an enthusiastic “thumbs up” from the playwright, herself.

From the Streets of New York

to the International Stage

(October, 2019): This project was was a five-day, sponsored visit with renowned actor, director, and four-time Fulbright scholar, Dr. Baron Kelly.  Dr. Kelly's time in Houston included classroom visits, lectures, and an acting workshop for high school students, rounded out by a hosted conversation and reception at the Rienzi Museum and a tour and breakfast with members of Houston’s celebrated Ensemble Theatre.  This project’s message was to seek out the widest world possible and the project was a resounding success!
